After completing his college career at George Washington University, Sam was selected by the Minnesota Twins organization. He was promoted to the big league team in 1977. In 1979, he was with the San Diego Padres organization and was called up again to the big league team. In 1980, Sam spent a year playing for the Yakult Swallows in the Japanese Baseball League. Sam started his minor league baseball coaching career in 1982 with the New York Mets organization and was with the organization from 1982 to 1986. In 1987 he was promoted to the Mets big league team as a third base coach till 1989. He was the third base coach for the Cincinnati Reds (1990-92), Seattle Mariners (1993-95), and the Baltimore Orioles (1996-2000). He was promoted to the Baltimore Orioles bench coach in 2001 to 2005, and promoted to Baltimore Orioles manager in 2005 to 2007. In 2008, he was again the third base coach for the Seattle Mariner, before becoming the third base coach for the Philadelphia Phillies from 2009-2010, and its first base coach from 2011-2012. Sam is currently the Minnesota Twins roving infield and base running coach for the minor leagues.
